At the beginning of the 20th century, paint manufacturers began adding a small amount of lead to their products because it was found to greatly improve the color quality, application, and durability of paint. Although the high toxicity and potential for very serious health effects resulting from lead exposure have been known since the early 1940’s, it was not until 1978 that the U.S government banned all use of lead in paint products.

It is estimated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), that approximately 38 million homes and other buildings in the U.S. still contain lead paint. It is generally accepted that lead based paint was used on all structures built prior to 1978.
